Karbon Homes is looking for a new chair after announcing that the current head of its board is to step down this summer.
Alexis Cleveland will leave the job in September after nearly six years with the North East housing association.
She was named chair designate in May last year, but in September will have served the maximum term allowed as a board member.
The group, which manages more than 34,000 homes across County Durham, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and Yorkshire, is also recruiting a new board member following the completion of Hanif Malik’s term.
It said it was particularly interested in candidates with experience of community engagement, placemaking and regeneration, or with lived experience of social housing.
The incoming chair will inherit a development programme to build a further 2,271 homes by 2030. To fund its pipeline, Karbon announced £200m in new financing last year from Santander, HSBC and Nationwide.
Ms Cleveland joined Karbon’s board in October 2020, and has also served as vice-chair and as a senior independent director.
She previously spent more than two decades in the civil service, including as chief executive of the Benefits Agency, which was at the time the largest government agency in the country, with more than 80,000 staff.
Ms Cleveland left Whitehall in 2011 to pursue non-executive jobs, including stints as chair of Barnardo’s and deputy chair of Durham University.
This comes after Karbon announced that it is seeking to attract private investment to fund more affordable housebuilding via its for-profit subsidiary, Graphite Living.
As part of a partnership with the Housing Diversity Network, Karbon is also offering a board trainee position alongside the two senior appointments, designed to help develop future board leaders’ skills.
Paul Fiddaman, chief executive at Karbon Homes, said: “We’re delighted to welcome interest in joining our group board.
“As a profit-for-purpose organisation, our focus is on providing good-quality homes, an excellent customer experience and shaping strong, sustainable communities across the North.
“We’re looking for values-driven individuals who share our social purpose and are committed to making a difference.
“The roles offer the opportunity to contribute to effective, collaborative governance. We also encourage applications from customers, recognising the significant insight that lived experience brings.”
