Arhag Housing Association will merge with Hyde Group from 1 April 2026, following a six-week consultation with residents, who expressed broad support for the move.

Arhag believes the move will offer greater financial stability and access to additional resources to support residents, many of whom are already neighbours of Hyde Group residents.

The associations hope the coming together will enable them to provide better, more timely repairs through combined expertise, focusing on customer service and achieving faster response times.

Streamlining will also allow them to commit to a stronger local presence in neighbourhoods, enabling them to better deliver new homes in high-need areas.

A concern raised by a “small” subset of residents was the importance of Arhag’s founding mission to provide a single community focus.

However, Hyde claims that it has, “over recent years, intentionally evolved beyond a single-community focus, broadening its remit to meet the needs of a more diverse resident base that reflects the diversity of London”.

The organisations believe that Hyde’s values align with its focus on refugee communities from Ukraine and Afghanistan.

Anne McLoughlin, interim chief executive of Arhag, said: “This move provides Arhag with stability and the opportunity to provide customers with a stronger and better service.

“We share a commitment with Hyde to work closely with customers and communities, and I’m excited about the benefits Hyde will be able to offer.”

Andy Hulme, chief executive of Hyde Group, said: “Throughout the process so far, we’ve found a real alignment of purpose between the organisations, which is rooted in putting customers first.

“We look forward to welcoming Arhag customers into the Hyde Group.”

Arhag owns just 900 homes across 15 London boroughs, mainly in Newham, Tower Hamlets and Haringey. The organisation was founded in 1979 as the African Refugee Housing Action Group to provide stable, affordable homes for refugees from Africa, and has since broadened its remit.

It will now invest all its income in providing homes and services for migrants, refugees and other residents in need.

Hyde manages around 125,000 homes nationally, including many in areas neighbouring Arhag’s stock, and provides neighbourhood services to 350,000 homes across the UK.
