Led by 35,000-home landlord Onward Homes, the initiatives range from tailored coaching sessions for customers, to providing funding for employment and training providers, schools and local community groups to deliver programmes.

In Greater Manchester, Onward has been joined by Shapes, Salford Media Club, charitable foundation Clarion Futures, and housing associations Great Places and Salix Homes to fund a free training programme for young people interested in media and podcasting.

The programme, led by The Reporters’ Academy, provided hands-on training at MediaCityUK to boost employability, real-world experience and industry exposure.

Awan, who took part in the training programme, said: “I had the opportunity to work with professional cameras and equipment, which was both exciting and educational.

“Being surrounded by like-minded young people and passionate mentors made every session inspiring, and it really opened my eyes to future possibilities in the media industry.”

In Lancashire, Onward’s support programme 1st Call is working closely with those whose health conditions affect their ability to work as part of the WorkWell project, which is funded by the government.

A participant, who was feeling anxious about returning to work after an accident which resulted in long-term leave and who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “My mentor from 1st Call has been so helpful and informative.

“Their support throughout the process gave me confidence to return to work after being off for a long time. They’ve also helped me apply for funding to get special equipment which will make my job easier. I’m incredibly grateful.”

Landlords in Manchester previously set a target to recruit 20% of their staff from social housing tenants by 2034.

Inside Housing’s Housing Hires campaign aims to promote the social housing sector as a good place to work, and supports people to find and develop careers at housing associations and councils.

Onward partnered with Jobcentre Plus and sporting charity Everton in the Community in Merseyside to deliver a meet-the-employer event this summer. Attendees had an opportunity to make connections with local employers from the trade and construction sectors. AA Molyneux, Bell Group, Casey, George Jones and Vistry provided insights into different career paths.

Since the event, AA Molyneux has taken two of the attendees on as apprentices. Lee Barrow, contract manager at the Liverpool-based builder, said: “The event was very enjoyable, and it was nice to see so many people attending seeking opportunities.”

A recent report suggested that a critical shortage of skilled workers will seriously impact the government’s ability to deliver 1.5 million new homes by 2029.

Joanne Danaher, director of housing and homeownership at Onward, said: “By investing in initiatives that enable people to be their best, we’re empowering our customers to gain the confidence and skills they need to thrive and reach their full potential.

“Together with our partners, we’re not only transforming individual lives, we’re creating a ripple effect across the communities we serve, where every job secured, every qualification earned and every goal achieved contributes to a brighter future.”

Onward also provides residents with access to training and funding. The Onward Employment and Training Fund offers grants of up to £500 for eligible customers, to break down barriers to employment, such as covering the cost of a professional qualification, purchasing work equipment or securing childcare.

Alongside this, the landlord’s digital connect programme is bridging the digital divide by supplying free devices, data packages and practical skills training to those who need it.

Earlier this year, over 25 organisations, including several large housing associations, signed up to Places for People’s skills academy.
