Clarion Futures’ well-being programme involves community centres and partner-run hubs in Clarion’s neighbourhoods offering free spaces for people to take part in activities, with a particular focus on older people.

It also provides practical help for residents with issues such as benefits claims, energy use and digital skills.

People visiting these spaces are also able to take home essential items including electric blankets, draught excluders and energy-efficient kitchen equipment, such as air fryers.

Phil Miles, director of Clarion Futures, said: “We often hear from residents who are worried about feeling isolated, staying warm or managing rising bills, especially as the cost of living crisis continues to affect people across our communities.

“Our well-being spaces are designed to provide practical support, but also connection – places where people can meet others, build confidence and take part in activities that improve well-being.”

The £1m donation comes from the Rothesay Foundation, the charitable foundation of pensions insurance giant Rothesay, and the programme also receives funding from Clarion Futures.

At least 55 well-being spaces across Clarion’s communities will be supported for the next two years.

James Dickson, chair at the Rothesay Foundation, said: “The Rothesay Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for older people in the UK, so we are pleased to renew our partnership with Clarion Futures and extend our funding of these vital well-being spaces for a further two years.

“This multi-year commitment will make a real difference for those experiencing isolation and financial hardship by creating more spaces to bring communities together, foster greater well-being and help older people to live in a happy, safe and fulfilling way.”

This new donation comes after Gavin Barwell, the former housing minister and chief of staff to Theresa May, left his role as chair of Clarion’s charity arm last year. He remains part of the giant landlord’s group board.

Mr Barwell, who joined the UK’s largest housing association as a non-executive in late 2019, was appointed chair of Clarion Futures in January 2022.
